The Best Of Me
© 1998 Kelly Wallin & Ferryn Martin
Hours ago you left, yet still I feel you here
On the scent of you that lingers, my senses keep you near
I just can't clear you from my head, though, Lord, I know I should
I don't really want to, even if I could
You know it's not the first time I've been this road before
But I feared too many battles, so I guess I left the war
But when I take your hand
How can I deny what my heart demands
CHORUS:
I want to (2. & 3. I'm gonna) love you anyway, no matter what they all (2 & 3. the world) may say
This love has got the power to drive the fears away
Loving you has set me free to reach the woman I was meant to be
Loving you is the best of me
The fears and questions come at me, no answers in their place
And all the walls I thought I'd built are falling from their state of grace
Can I trust this love to last this time
Forever seems a dream, too steep a hill to climb
CHORUS
Surrender best laid plans to life's uncertainty
The greatest things in life come from serendipity
CHORUS

You Were There

|
|||
You were there before I came to be, the beat of life, you beckoned me
From lullabies to MTV, from training wheels to moon landings
While cities burned and martyrs fell, we went to school, teach your children well
Tales of changing times, we heard you tell ... you were there
You were there as I drove down the road in my first car, life on my own
Choosing partners, making homes, teaching kids to "just say no"
Worked hard for the money to waste on the way on fitness clubs, computer games
When friends we lost too soon stole our immortality, you were there
And now we struggle making sense of this, the end of innocence
Half a life away from done - it's time to make repairs
For every road not taken, a dozen lie ahead
The other half of life is left to live
Will you be there when we are old and gray, turning you up in our hearing aids
If you're too loud, are we too old ... will you always be
There, like life's kaleidoscope ... through you, we see our tears and hopes
And when we sing our final notes, we know ... you'll be there
Will you be there .... yes, you'll be there

In Its Own Time
© 1997 Kelly Wallin and Ferryn Martin
I hear the sounds ... of life out there
Filter through this darkened room as I sit here in this chair
I doubt the neighbors even know that you're gone
Who really cares anyway - you know, life really does go on
Somebody's dog is barking ... I don't know whose
Someone else's TV is blaring somebody else's news
I know you're out there somewhere too getting on with your new life
While I just sit here listening to the clock tick off the time
CHORUS:
Well, everything has it's own time
All good poets know to let the poem find its own rhyme
And no matter how we race, life proceeds at its own pace
And this too shall pass ... in its own time
The night is darkest just before the break of dawn
Children have to fall before they ever walk alone
So let me stumble through this dark night on my way to a better place
Redemption isn't free, you've got to pay a price to run the human race
CHORUS

On Our Way
04:13
|
|||
Used to be life was so simple, looking through the eyes of youth
All the years and the world and the people ... living tangles up the truth
Trying just to do things right, we sometimes do the wrong things well
Avoiding pain to be polite, we undermine and lose our self
This game, it's got no book of rules ... we learn them as we play (but I know we're)
CHORUS:
All ... on our way ...
We're all .... on our way ...
Careful now - make good decisons ... remember, though, to seize the day
Life is filled with admonitions, how to be and what to say
Standing here now at this crossroads, find your spirit, heed its call
Anger eats away your soul ... forgiveness spurs your journey on
Fill your sails with reverence for this life, run with the wind
CHORUS
CHORUS (with counter lines:)
Say you're sorry to your sister
Learn to turn the other cheek
Let your bridges stand behind you
Give your brother one more break

The Prayer
© 1997 Kelly Wallin
Here's a prayer for you from one who
So much wants to help you through
I see the way your heart is torn
Between what is and what could be
I wish I had a crystal ball
Some sage advice ... anything at all
But all I have to offer
Is this steadfast heart and these prayers for you:
I pray the lord your soul to keep safe and strong and true
I pray that courage lifts you past uncertainty and sees you through
I pray that soon you might see the way your heart declares is right for you
All I have to offer is this steadfast heart and my prayers for you

One Life
© 1996 Kelly Wallin and Ferryn Martin
Prologue:
A cold day in December down Alabama Way
Her feet were cold from working, so she climbed aboard to stay
When she sat down did she know the ripples this pebble thrown had started
The lives she changed with just one act...just one life
CHORUS:
Like the wings of distant butterflies, one life can change it all
Storms are born of just a breeze, single shots bring war
If you believe it matters not the things you do today
Remember those who've gone before, the difference one life made
A woman in Calcutta who feeds the hungry child
She could turn away to pray, but she goes another mile
Through the drive of her devotion to the downtrod, does she see
The difference made by simple acts of kindness, by just one life
CHORUS
Even now, a girl wanders down a highway in her mind
She looks out on this planet and the speed of humankind
She says her life means nothing, that she cannot do a thing
All's not lost if she can see the power of one life ...
CHORUS

I Wonder
Copyright 1998 Kelly Wallin/Ferryn
I wonder could he know that it would end that night
Just walking down that road, hitching that last ride
Just an ordinary man – he played the horn, they say
A man we’d never know but for a wicked twist of fate
I wonder could he know he’d end that way
I wonder could they tell, that night they drove, those three
That they would detour into hell to carry out their deed
What could they be thinking as they beat and chained him down
And dragged him til his body torn and bleeding stained the ground
I wonder could they know their night would end that way
I wonder who we blame to purge ourselves of rage
The system or the men … and what part do we all play
Hate is just a symptom, born of ignorance and fear
Victimized by narrow minds, our people need to hear
The trumpet call for peace to all this ordinary man has played
I wonder when we’ll hear it
I wonder when we’ll teach it
I wonder when we’ll live it
(Dedicated to the family of James Byrd Jr and the brave people of Jasper, Texas, who could have divided a nation … but didn’t)

Boogie-Woogie Blues
© 1996 Kelly Wallin & Ferryn Martin
I know a girl who lives on the edge all the time
I know a girl who lives on the edge all the time
Well, livin on the edge for you and me sounds crazy but she just don't agree
That girl I know who lives on the edge all the time
I know a boy who knows about havin fun
I know a boy who knows about havin fun
But when he plays with all his toys, he shares them with the other boys
That boy I know who knows about havin fun
CHORUS:
You gotta go, go, go til you can't go no more
You gotta show, show, show what livin is for
Never look back or the blues can attack...listen to what I say
Just say no, no, no to the safe and sound
You gotta throw, throw, throw a little risk around
That's how you chase those boogie-woogie blues away
I've got a dog that's got no pedigree
I've got a dog that's got no pedigree
Well, I'll tell you that dog's way more fun than those wimpy, whiny, papered ones
That dog of mine that's got no pedigree
I've got a car that's fast and sleek and cool
I've got a car that's fast and sleek and cool
So what if I can barely fit myself and one itty-bitty friend in it
That car of mine that's fast and sleek and cool
CHORUS
We've got a group of friends that don't let us down
We've got a group of friends that don't let us down
Even though they've heard our songs a thousand times, they still sing along
Those friends of ours that never let us down
CHORUS

Just You Wait
© 1997 Kelly Wallin & Ferryn Martin
There they go singing another song about "true love" early on
Gee, what a many splendored thing is newfound love - remember how sweet back (then)
(Then) it was for you and me - you would write such poetry
Baby, I just loved your "way," yet even then I would say
CHORUS:
Just you wait ... to see what time can make
Of love when nothing much is new, yet here I am still loving you
There they go gazing into each other's eyes while the world goes by
Sharing stories one by one ... how hard can it be just to hang up the phone?
Everything brand spanking new - homes and cars and memories, too
As good as they think it is today, looking back now makes me wanna say
CHORUS
Instrumental (2 verses)
Bridge:
Love like a fine wine's gotta mature
You wait a few years - let it endure
The bumps along the road of life
Our love stands the test of time

Get Over Yourself
© 1997 Kelly Wallin & Ferryn Martin
You say they're not like us
You say it with such vengeance
That I wonder if the very thing you hate you have become
Blinded to your bias
Justified by your defiance
But what good does it do us to just keep on doing it wrong
CHORUS:
So get over yourself, get over it all
Can't you see the writing on the wall
Get over yourself before it's too late
Think twice before you further separate us
Two wrongs a right don't make, the path to love is not through hate
Get out of your head, get into your heart
Get over yourself
You say that they're to blame
Too bad now, such a shame
You told them so, they should've known, well, that's just how it goes
Standing on the laurels
Of your oh, so holy morals
Well, I'll bet it gets real lonely in your glass house throwing stones
CHORUS
Bridge:
Funny thing about the way we sometimes fail to see
The mirror can reveal the face of our worst enemy

The Year Of The Comet

The Year Of The Comet
© 1998 Kelly Wallin & Ferryn Martin
The year was young, our hopes were high
We headed for the mountains where the rain poured from the sky
Celebration to frustration, life turned "truth or dare"
Deep down I guess we knew that change was in the air
New jobs, new homes, new dogs, new cats with stupid names
New cars, new boats, new songs, new people playing those same old games
OId and new friends, strange but true friends, seeing who will stay
Life hangs in the balance, walls or bridges will we make
CHORUS:
It had to be the comet; you know the one with that funny name
The year our lives turned upside down; well, that must be the thing to blame
It's gotta be that comet, causing such celestial change
Mark my words from this year on, our lives will never be the same
Who would've thought that funny girl could be "that way"
(Who would've known ... Ellen showed the way)
Yet a million people shared her laughter and her pain
(Shared her laughter ...)
Coming out or going in or staying just the same
Does it really matter with the shape this old world's in
CHORUS
Instrumental (verse)
A thousand souls arrived this year, some left through Heaven's gate
Is it just the way things go or some predestined fate
Safe in our complacency, denying life's great game:
Just when you think it's all worked out, guess what - it's changed
CHORUS

You Drive Me Crazy (But You're My Friend)
© 1996 Kelly Wallin
I wrote this song to honor you, my friend, tonight
Cuz thanking everyone but you would be an oversight
So stand here right next to me, cuz I'm paralyzed with fright (God only knows)
You drive me crazy, but you're my friend
Before you my music was a private thing, you know
But then you came along and now my private life's a show
So listen now to Hell freeze over as I stand and sing alone
This is all your fault, but you're my friend
CHORUS:
You drive me crazy, but you're my friend
Our friendship's like a roller-coaster ride that I hope will never end
I could search the whole world over, but I know I'd never find another like you
You drive me crazy, but you're my friend
I agonize for days over what you shrug away
I write a thousand words for what you in ten words could say
The crazy thing is how I somehow know you're good for me
You drive me crazy, but you're my friend
(Instrumental)
CHORUS
I know I drive you crazy, too, so we're both a little bit crazy...
But we're still friends!
